Africa is a vast continent that covers about one-fifth of the Earth’s land area. It has 54 fully recognised sovereign states, eight territories and two de facto independent states with limited or no recognition. It is surrounded by four major water bodies: the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Africa has a rich and diverse cultural heritage, with more than 2,000 languages spoken and various religions practiced. Africa also has a wide range of natural resources, such as oil, gold, diamonds, minerals and wildlife.
